Welcome to the rousing story of the revival of the Yiddish language and its cultural renaissance, following artists from around the world across numerous disciplines as they reignite a dying language and use this mother tongue in music, theatre, opera and literature. From behind-the-scenes with an acclaimed Yiddish-language version of Yentl to enjoyably transgressive punk-Klezmer musicians—the endangered Yiddish language is alive and well, experiencing something of a global cultural renaissance.   

The language originated in Jewish communities of Eastern Europe but almost disappeared when more than half of the world’s Yiddish speakers were murdered during the Holocaust. Most of the artists and performers (aka Yiddishists) didn’t grow up speaking Yiddish but all have found solace, identity and inspiration in its rich traditions and culture. For them, Yiddishland is not a homeland but a heartland. They come together from all over the world to attend joyous, vibrant festivals and share their work and passion for Yiddish language and culture with the next generation. WELCOME TO YIDDISHLAND offers audiences an upbeat, witty, empowered and inclusive depiction of "Jewishness."    

The film features amazing performances by Jewish music makers and Yiddish mavens: The Bashevis Singers, Sasha Lurje and Seattle’s own Craig Judelman, Sveta Kundish, Polina Shepherd, Alan Bern, Daniel Kahn and Alan Bern of the band Brave Old World.

Ticket Types:

9:30am Brunch + Film tickets and passholders enjoy a delicious spread of homemade Jewish comfort food including egg frittata, local Rachel's Bagels with fixings and shmear, fruit, and dessert to enjoy in the theater while listening to The KlezKatz! before the film. Doors open at 9:30am for brunch. Film at 10:30am included with ticket.

10:30am Film only tickets also available. All tickets include klezmer music, coffee and tea. Doors open at 10am for film only ticket holders.

Ros Horin graduated from the prestigious Drama Centre London and has directed productions for most major Australian theatre companies. As artistic director of the Griffin Theatre for over 12 years, she established its reputation as an Australian Writers’ Theatre. Her first two feature documentaries BAULKHAM HILLS AFRICAN LADIES TROUPE (2016) and ROSEMARY’S.
