Adult Art Workshop with Melkorka Helgadottir

LOST, REFUSED – FOUND, REUSED Join us at Scandinavia House for a beginner-friendly adult art workshop. Inspired by the work of Scandinavian artists like Ásta Ólafsdóttir, Isabel Berglund, and Kristian Devantier, participants will create 3-dimensional assemblage art from found materials. Guided by teaching artist Korka, participants will create art in a relaxed atmosphere. All materials are provided. There is a limit of 12 participants for this workshop. ABOUT MELKORKA HELGADOTTIR Melkorka Helgadottir, A.K.A. Korka, is an Icelandic visual artist and teaching artist living in Brooklyn, NY. She received an MFA in Sculpture from San Francisco Art Institute and has taught for Brooklyn Arts Council, LEAP, and Studio in a School. As a teaching artist, Korka believes in nurturing the creative spark that each of her students possesses. She is currently working on an autobiographical comic.

Join us at Scandinavia House for a beginner-friendly adult art workshop. Inspired by the work of Scandinavian artists like Eva Hild and late ceramicist Ragnar Kjartansson, participants will create an abstract clay sculpture imbued with natural and organic forms. Guided by teaching artist Korka, participants will create art in a relaxed atmosphere. Participants who have respiratory issues are encouraged to wear masks. All materials are provided. Children's Center Reservations

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE SIGNED IN WITH YOUR EMAIL TO ACCESS ALL RESERVATIONS. Reservations for the 2-hour play sessions. ASF Family membership required, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. Thursdays and Saturdays, open to the public as well as members. A reservation ticket must be purchased for each participating child, caregivers do not need to purchase tickets for themselves. ASF Family members are limited to 3 reservation tickets per session. All sales are final, no refunds or exchanges. Please sign the ASF Liability Waiver on our website and bring to your first play session.

Lena Jonsson Trio

Join us February 13 for a performance by Swedish folk artists the Lena Jonsson Trio! Acclaimed for their unique mix of deeply rooted Swedish folk, jazz, American old-time and electroacoustic sounds, the trio has been the recipient of awards including Artist of the Year at the Swedish Folk awards. Led by the visionary musician Lena Jonsson alongside guitarist Erik Ronström and bassist Krydda Sundström, the virtuosic and playful trio’s album Stories from the Outside won both a Swedish Grammis and the Manifest prize in 2021. Stories from the Outside also won Album of the year by LIRA Music Magazine and song of the year by Swedish radio. They released their third album Elements in June 2023

Lux Audience Award: Dahomey

Thousands of royal artifacts of Dahomey, a West African kingdom, were taken by French colonists in the 19th century for collection and display in Paris. Centuries later, a fraction returned to their home in modern-day Benin. This dramatized documentary follows the journey of 26 of the treasures as told by cultural art historians, embattled university students, and one of the repatriated statues himself.

Nordic Utopia? Gallery Tour

On view from November 26, 2024 to March 9, 2025 at Scandinavia House, Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century, looks at the significance of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as destinations for African American cultural figures including Ronald Burns, Doug Crutchfield, Herb Gentry, Dexter Gordon, William Henry Johnson, Howard Smith and Walter Williams through a range of artifacts, artworks (music, paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, textiles), and documentary evidence (photography, film, and journalistic writing). In this guided tour by Emily Stoddart, ASF’s Manager of Exhibitions & Community Programs, learn about the artists in this exhibition and their works. These free, 35-minute public tours meet in the Gallery elevator lobby. Gallery tours are subject to change; please check with the Scandinavia House front desk or email info@amscan.org.
