A RENESAN in the Railyard presentation in collaboration with the Jean Cocteau Cinema: Jazz and the Music of the French New Wave Cinema. After World War II, a new generation of French artists and intellectuals rejected mainstream movies in favor of a modern look and sound borrowed from American films and jazz. This talk explores whether jazz was essential to the New Wave films from directors Louis Malle, Jean Luc Godard, and Agnes Varda which had music by Miles Davis, Martial Solal, and the Jazz Messengers. Mark Davis has taught three previous RENESAN courses on French cultural history, including film, and ten courses on jazz.
